What To Do After The Flip

By Jason | Aug 20, 2008

I have read a lot of posts on flipping sites lately, whether they be static websites, blogs or forums. I have myself recently flipped a few BANS stores, a blog I put together and put content on and a phpBB game forum.

The biggest question most of you have is "What do I do during/after the flip? ".

First off, the payment.

On a recent flip, I asked the buyer if he would transfer the money to my bank account instead of using paypal, mainly because I don’t like the percentage they take out. The buyer said he didn’t feel safe doing this and that paypal was the only option he felt good about using. He stated with paypal, he could file a dispute and receive a refund if the deal had gone bad.

So paypal might not be such a bad idea after all and if you explain this to the customer during the sale, they might feel more at ease about the whole transaction and things will go smoother.

Google Checkout is another payment option you might consider. I have not used their service so you will need to check into that yourself.

Secondly, the domain transfer.

My domain names were registered through Godaddy.com (Although I use Name.com now.) and was easily transferred to the new owner through the domain manager. You simply log into the Godaddy domain manager, select the domain name and then click on the ‘account change’ icon. This will allow you to input the users email address or godaddy account username as the new owner.

You will have to check into what it takes to transfer ownership with other registrars you are registered with.

Third, the site transfer.

There are a few ways you can do this and even make you an affiliate sale in the process.

* The method I use most often is to simply have the buyer signup for a Hostgator account (have them use your affiliate link so you make a $100 commission on the signup.) and as part of Hostgator’s service, they will transfer all files and databases over to the new account. Make sure you tell Hostgator which files and databases to move over or they might transfer everything and you do not want that to happen.

* Another great way is to signup for a Hostgator reseller account and put each website you own or plan to flip under its own account with full cpanel and ftp access. You can offer 1 to 12 months of free hosting with the flip or offer the buyer hosting for a cheap price and have residual income coming in from the flip.

* If the customer prefers another host to Hostgator then you are left with 2 choices. You can either backup the database and zip it and the contents of the website into separate zip or tar.gz files and hand them over to the buyer where he will have to install and restore the databases himself or you can take the zip or tar.gz files you made earlier and setup the account for him/her as part of the sale.

My favorite plugin tool for backing up and restoring wordpress databases is WP-DBManager . You can also use it to optimize your databases and schedule regular backups that can be emailed to you. It is a great plugin and I highly recommend it.

Note: Make sure to not switch the nameservers over to the new servers until the website and databases have been completely setup and confirmed to be working. This will make the switchover go smoothly. You can make another backup of the database right after the nameserver switch and restore it on the new server so you do not miss any new comments or posts.

I hope this helps some of you in your website flipping endeavors. If you have any suggestions that I might have missed, please feel free to comment and let me know.

Good post. I just finished flipping my first website for a small profit, but recognized mistakes that might help me make more money.
    Thanks for your tips.

Good points about making affiliate sales during the process. I would advise against Paypal just because I’ve recently had a bad experience with them but it seems most people do use Paypal.

Yeah I try and steer clear of them but sometimes you have no choice. Most everyone uses eBay which means every one of them have Paypal. No one has Google Checkout accounts. Sadly.

So we do what we must do to get the sale.

Great post. I was wondering how people can offer 12 months of free hosting with a site when they sell it. I now know how that is possible.

I use the SitePoint and DigitalPoint forums, Craigslist in the big cities sections and on WebsiteOutlook.com’s sites for sale section.

There are a few more out there but I can’t remember what they are. I only use the 4 sites I listed already.

You should wait 1-2 days after the payment via Paypal before transferring the site/domain to make sure that the funds are legit. And Paypal will always side with the seller when it comes to virtual items.

Hey, another question about the BANS sites. Do they need to have a Bans license? Or are you able to just leave the site as is and have them update it with their Ebay Partner Account info.

They need to have their own BANS license. Good thing about this is you can have them purchase a bans license through your affiliate link and make an extra $44 off the deal. Cant beat that!

    2008-08-27 05:20:34

So obviously you are telling them they will need to make this purchase in the auction? Or are you deducting from the price… not sure where you would mention this.

You tell them they must already own a BANS license because the software license doesn’t transfer over with sale. Then you give them your affiliate link and make sure they purchase it.

I posted a gocode link from my site so I could track the clicks. I actually had 11 clicks and made 2 sales, the buyer and a viewer that liked the site and decided to buy a license for himself.

So it actually made me $88 on top of the flip.

Craiglist is the easiest place to sale things like this. Digitalpoint and Sitepoint people are savvy and have already heard of BANS. So they offer like $20 for a BANS site.

Craigslist people usually never heard of BANS and love the idea. They will usually jump on the chance to buy the site for the BIN price and go right out and purchase a license.

    2008-08-27 13:22:32

Hmm… thanks for the update. So the BIN price doesn’t include the fact that they still need to drop 97 bucks on another site. If I might ask… what are you setting as your BIN? $50, $100, or something less?

Yeah the BIN doesn’t include the BANS license. On Craigslist… I set the BIN price to $500 and didn’t expect to hit it. I was surprised to find that someone actually wanted to pay that much.

In fact the buyer was so happy with the site and the software that he had me give him advice on setting up more sites. He now has 14. I even gave him one of my bans header designers for the work.

Doubt you would find people on digitalpoint and sitepoint that didn’t know about BANS and that would be excited by it.

The sad thing is people think if they pay via paypal for a website they are covered and they ARE NOT. Paypal will close their case as soon as they find out they were purchasing virtual goods. Even if they bought a website and never got it, because it was not physically shipped, paypal will not back their money.

hey, thanks for telling me about this page :)

anyway, is it safe for us to use paypal ?, I mean, how about after we transfer the domain name, file and database. the buyer charge back via Paypal ?, is it possible ? (sorry for this dumb question, paypal just open their services for my country for a couple of month, so we here not quite too familiar with it)

    @Tara :
so, if we use Paypal. which one will be covered more ?, the buyer or the seller ?

Paypal is on our side when it comes to disputes because the item being sold is electronic and not a real physical product. They can’t prove they didn’t receive it.

Unless it is physically shipped to them, they cannot receive a refund for it.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. They cannot reverse the charges anyway.

The only reason you would wait is so you could make sure the funds were transferred to your bank account and out of paypal before handing the product over.

You don’t want the funds frozen in your account. Even if you do win the dispute, it could still freeze your money in the account for up to 10 days.
